During the course of 2018, Iran maintained its status of a growth driver in the MENA and global DRI segments, as even the US sanctions renewal did not prevent the country from the most dynamic production increase. Further prospects for the Islamic Republic, however, look rather challenging but not hopeless.

Iran’s DRI output surged by 31.7% to 25.5 million t year-on-year in 2018, according to worldsteel. Such significant growth is attributed to production capacity expansion as well as stronger crude steel output. At the same time, 2019 outlook is rather unclear due to the steel consumption slide in the domestic market as well as number of challenges with export sales, which traditionally supported production.
